Battleground to Huntington Gap Loop (Fayston) – Advanced
Calendar: Community Calendar
Kara Hankes
03-01-2008
This is an advanced tour of about 8 miles for skiers with good backcountry skills and gear. The route is a loop that follows parts of the current Catamount Trail with bushwhacks along two proposed re-routes to get to Huntington Gap. The return will follow the existing CT, which has some steep down hills. If snow conditions do not permit the bushwhacks, we will go out and back along the current CT. Climbing skins required.

Tentative Date!

This will be a very strenuous tour of about 25–30 miles that will circumnavigate Mt. Mansfield via Madonna Vasa Trail, W.B. Trail, Underhill Trail, Catamount Trail, Houghton Trail, and Smuggler’s Notch Road. Participants must be in excellent physical shape. Climbing skins are advised. Since good snow conditions are necessary to do this tour, it may be rescheduled to the first opportunity when conditions are right. Inform the leaders below of your interest well in advance so you can be notified of any rescheduling and check the CTA web site often for date changes.

Backcountry Tour for Turns (Tunbridge) – Advanced/Intermediate

This tour of about 5 miles is for strong intermediate skiers who like to practice their Telemark turns. The route follows an old road with a slight climb to an open meadow that has a steep descent on one side and a more moderate slope on the other. In this area we will admire the beautiful views of Mt Moosilauke and do a few “laps” of enjoying turns on the way down and skinning back up for more.

Join us for the FIRST official tour on the FINAL section of the newly completed 300 mile Catamount Trail. This 5-mile jaunt through the GMNF is challenging in places and mostly backcountry.
